Disneyland broke ground Monday, August 24, 2026, on a new parking structure and transportation hub on the east side of the resort. It is not a new ride, and it does not open this year.
This is the arrival infrastructure that has to exist before the next wave of attractions can take the space the current east-side lots and bus loops occupy.
If you are visiting in 2026, the practical questions are narrower than the renderings. Where will you park, how messy is Harbor Boulevard, and which future projects actually have dates?
I’ll separate confirmed construction from D23 mood-boarding.
What Disney is actually building
Disney’s own public affairs page is the cleanest description, and it’s deliberately unglamorous. The project is “a new parking structure and transportation hub” on the east side of Disneyland Resort, on a portion of the Manchester Cast Member parking lot.
We already covered the Manchester lot closing for Eastern Gateway when Cast parking shifted earlier this summer. Monday’s ceremony is the official start of the garage itself.
Confirmed elements from Disney:
- Approximately 6,000 parking spaces
- Dedicated shuttle and rideshare areas
- Security screening at the hub
- Dedicated traffic access off Disney Way
- A pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard to a reimagined esplanade
- Public access across that bridge to and from Harbor Boulevard
ABC7 noted that 6,000 spaces is a little more than half the size of the Mickey and Friends garage. That’s a useful scale check.
This is a major garage. It is not a second Mickey and Friends.
Disney is no longer using the old “Eastern Gateway” name in official materials. Fan sites still say it.
If you’re searching, use both phrases. If you’re reading a press line, expect “parking structure and transportation hub on the east side.”
Monday’s groundbreaking included Disneyland Resort President Jill Estorino and Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken, along with Imagineering’s executive architect Jonathan Peters. Leaders from McCarthy Building Companies, Granite Construction, and the local building trades were also on site, according to Laughing Place and Daps Magic.
Estorino’s on-site quote, as reported: “This new parking structure and transportation hub will transform how guests arrive, creating a more seamless experience from the start of their day, while improving traffic flow throughout the resort area.” That’s the guest-facing pitch.
The strategic pitch is the next section.
There is no opening date
Disney has not announced when the garage, the hub, or the Harbor bridge will open. ABC7 said as much the day after groundbreaking.
Disney’s public affairs page calls it multi-year construction that was slated to begin in fall 2026. The ceremonial start landed slightly ahead of that window, on August 24.
Any 2027 or 2028 opening year you see on a forum is a guess. Mickey and Friends and Pixar Pals stay in use.
Disney has not said this east-side garage replaces them. For the next several years you will still park in the same two structures, then deal with whatever Harbor and esplanade work is active that week.

What it means for your trip right now
The guest impact in late August 2026 is enabling work, not a closed parking garage. You are not losing Mickey and Friends.
You are walking through a construction zone on the east side of the esplanade.
East esplanade ticket-booth demolition is already in motion. Disney Tourist Blog reported that Disney filed permits to demolish the four east esplanade ticket booths, then put construction walls around them around the start of Halloween Time 2026.
Theme Park IQ tracked those Anaheim permits flipping to ready-to-issue on August 18. If you arrive from Harbor Boulevard hotels, expect walls, a tighter walk, and fewer booths in that first stretch inside security.
Buy tickets online. I already tell people that.
This is the week it stops being optional. A wall where a booth used to be is not the moment to discover you still need a park reservation.
Harbor Boulevard crossings will get messier before they get better. The finished project puts you on a bridge over the street.
Until that bridge exists, you still cross at grade, next to staging for the thing that will eventually replace the crossing. Budget extra time from Harbor hotels, especially on Oogie Boogie Bash nights and October weekends.
Cast Member parking is part of the site. The garage sits on a portion of the Manchester employee lot.
That is a backstage problem until it spills into guest traffic, which it can, because displaced employee parking has to go somewhere. Watch for temporary lot changes and longer tram waits on peak days.
Disney has not published a guest parking closure tied to this groundbreaking.
Rideshare and shuttle drop-offs are the other near-term friction point. The finished hub is supposed to pull that traffic onto Disney Way and off the worst Harbor curb chaos.

Why this garage exists: the D23 expansion stack
The parking structure is not the attraction. It is the permission slip for the attractions.
Disney’s public affairs page, last updated August 18, 2026, lays out the park-side projects this hub is meant to support. D23 (August 14-16) then put them in a sequence.
Estorino’s order, as reported by the Orange County Business Journal, Blog Mickey, and Scott Gustin, is:
- Avengers Campus expansion at DCA, officially opening in 2028
- The Coco boat ride at DCA, under construction, no opening year
- A reimagining of Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park, early design, no attractions named
- An Avatar destination at DCA, behind those three
Avengers is the only one with an official year. Stark Flight Lab and Avengers Infinity Defense are under construction now.
Disney says they will double Avengers Campus and reopen the connection toward Cars Land. If you are planning a 2028 trip around that, you have a real date.
If you are planning a 2026 trip around it, you have construction walls in Hollywood Land and that’s it. Pair that with our older April 2026 construction roundup if you need ride closures, not garage news.
Coco is a boat ride near Pixar Pier and Paradise Gardens Park, built mostly in backstage space. Construction has started.
Disney has not given an opening year. Anyone selling you “Coco in 2027” is guessing, and our Coco ride and Plaza de la Familia guide is still the right page for the seasonal overlay you can actually see this fall.
Tomorrowland is the D23 headline, and it is still a statement of intent. No attractions were named.
Imagineering’s Emo O’Brien said the team is just getting started. Estorino’s line, reported by the Orange County Register from the D23 media briefing, was about Tomorrowland, not Avatar: “It is coming. We are finally committing to it and doing it.”
Autopia’s gas-to-electric conversion in early 2027 is a related, confirmed piece. It is not the full land reimagining.
Avatar is still on the books. Disney says it will transform part of the Hollywood Backlot, drawing from The Way of Water and later films.
Official language is early development, with construction timeframes to come later. That matches what we already flagged in the Monsters, Inc. closing and Avatar land explainer: the Backlot cannot fully turn over until this arrival hub exists.
Do not treat Disney Tourist Blog’s 2029 or 2030 Avatar construction guesses as official. They’re informed speculation.
They are not a date you should print on a family itinerary.
What this is not
It is not a new park entrance you can use next month. The bridge and the reimagined esplanade are the end state.
It is not a replacement for paying to park. Disney has not announced pricing for the new structure.
Assume the same paid parking rules in the 2026 parking guide, plus whatever surge they attach to peak days.
It is not proof that Avatar, Coco, and Tomorrowland all open in a tight cluster. The garage is infrastructure for a multi-year slate.
Avengers in 2028 is the only dated park project in that slate. Everything else is sequenced without years.
It is also not a reason to avoid the resort. I still think the rest of 2026 is easy to visit if you treat the east esplanade as a construction corridor and give Harbor Boulevard a little more time.
The people who will have a bad arrival are the ones who assume the old curb-drop muscle memory still works on a party night.
How I’d plan around it
Park at Mickey and Friends or Pixar Pals unless Disney emails a lot change. Use the tram.
Do not count on a brand-new east-side garage for any 2026 or 2027 trip.
If you’re staying on Harbor, walk in through security as you do now, but expect walls where the east ticket booths were. Have tickets and reservations already on your phone.
Harbor hotels still make sense if you want to skip the garage entirely. Start with cheap hotels near Disneyland under $100 and the Good Neighbor hotel ranking if you are shopping walking distance, not Disney-branded rooms.
If someone in your group needs a will-call style interaction, do it at a remaining booth or inside Guest Relations, not in the choke point by the walls. If you are rolling a suitcase on a travel day, use luggage storage instead of dragging it through the construction corridor.
If you’re using rideshare, confirm the current lot in the app that morning. Disney Way access is the long-term plan, not the current instruction.
If you’re flying in, the garage news does not change SNA, LGB, or LAX. Use Getting to Disneyland from the airport for that leg.
If you’re picking travel years, 2028 is the first year I’d circle for a “new stuff” trip because Avengers finally has an official opening year. Coco might beat it.
It also might not. Tomorrowland and Avatar are later.
The parking hub might be open by then. It also might still be a bridge to nowhere.
Plan the trip around a park you can walk into, not a garage that exists in a rendering. If you still need a crowd-timing pass, use the best time to visit Disneyland in 2026 guide and the crowd calendar instead of waiting on an opening date Disney has not published.
