Updated April 2026. The current Disneyland smoking policy, where smoking is and is not permitted, what counts as smoking under the policy, and what happens if you violate the rules.
If you are planning to smoke during a Disneyland visit, there is one thing you need to know before you go: there are no designated smoking areas anywhere on Disneyland Resort property. None in the parks, none in the Esplanade between the parks, none in Downtown Disney, and none at the Disney Resort hotels.
To smoke, you must fully exit the security perimeter and leave the resort property. The nearest spots where smoking is permitted are on Harbor Boulevard, just outside the main entrance plaza.
The Full Disneyland Smoking Policy

Disneyland banned smoking on all resort property on May 1, 2019. Prior to that date, there were designated smoking areas inside both parks. Those are gone. The current policy covers the entire resort:
- Disneyland Park — no smoking anywhere inside the park
- Disney California Adventure — no smoking anywhere inside the park
- The Esplanade between the two parks — no smoking
- Downtown Disney District — no smoking
- Disneyland Hotel, Grand Californian, and Pixar Place Hotel — no smoking, including in guest rooms and on balconies
The policy applies to cigarettes, cigars, pipes, electronic cigarettes, vapes, and any other smoking or vaping device. Cannabis products are also prohibited under the policy, even in states where recreational use is legal.
Where You Can Smoke Near Disneyland
To smoke, you need to exit the resort property entirely. That means passing back through the security checkpoint exit and leaving the Esplanade. Once you are outside the security perimeter on Harbor Boulevard or the surrounding streets, you are off Disneyland property and subject to California state law rather than Disney policy.
California law prohibits smoking within 20 feet of any entrance, exit, or operable window of a public building. Keep that in mind when choosing a spot near the resort entrance.
The nearest practical options for smokers are on the sidewalks along Harbor Boulevard outside the main entrance plaza. There are no benches, dedicated shelters, or amenities at these spots. It is simply the public sidewalk outside the resort.
If you are staying at a Good Neighbor Hotel on Harbor Boulevard, most hotels have designated outdoor smoking areas on their property. Check with your specific hotel at check-in for the exact location.
Can You Re-Enter After Smoking?
Yes. You can exit the parks, go smoke outside the security perimeter, and re-enter. You will need to go through the security checkpoint again on the way back in. Keep your park ticket or pass accessible. There is no time limit on how long you can be outside, and your ticket remains valid for re-entry as normal.
The main practical consideration is time. Depending on where you are in the park when you decide to smoke, the round trip to the exit, outside the gates, and back through security can take 20-30 minutes or more. Factor that into your planning, especially if you are in the middle of a busy touring day.
Smoking at the Disneyland Resort Hotels
The no-smoking policy covers all three Disney Resort hotels. Smoking is not permitted inside guest rooms, on balconies or patios, in common areas, or anywhere else on hotel grounds. Disney assesses a room recovery fee of $250-$500 plus tax for guests who smoke in a guest room or on a balcony.
If you are a smoker staying on-property, ask hotel staff at check-in for the nearest off-property location where smoking is permitted. Staff can point you toward the closest exit from the resort grounds.
What Happens If You Smoke Inside the Parks
Cast Members will ask you to stop and direct you to exit the park if you wish to smoke. Guests who refuse or repeatedly violate the policy can be removed from the park. Disneyland takes the policy seriously — the resort-wide ban was specifically introduced to address guest complaints about smoke exposure in crowded areas.
Tips for Smokers Visiting Disneyland
Plan your exits strategically. If you know you will want to smoke during the day, plan those breaks around natural transition points — arriving at the park, heading back for a midday break at your hotel, or leaving for the evening. Trying to slip out mid-ride-wait is not practical.
Check your hotel’s smoking policy before booking. If you are staying at a Good Neighbor Hotel rather than a Disney Resort hotel, policies vary. Some have designated outdoor smoking areas. Others have strict no-smoking policies on all grounds. Confirm before booking if this matters to you.
Nicotine patches or gum are a practical option for long park days. Many regular smokers find that a long Disneyland day — often 10-12 hours on property — is easier to manage with nicotine replacement products rather than repeated exits to smoke.
Vapes are subject to the same rules as cigarettes. There is no exception for e-cigarettes, vapes, or similar devices. The policy covers all smoking and vaping products equally.
