Disneyland Height Requirements

Updated April 2026 — Full height requirements for all rides at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.

One of the most important things to check before your Disneyland visit — especially if you’re bringing children — is the height requirements for every ride. Disney enforces these strictly for guest safety. If your child doesn’t meet the minimum height, Cast Members will not allow them to board, even if they’ve waited an hour in line. This guide gives you every height requirement at both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, organized by park and by height tier, so you can plan your day before you arrive.

How Height Requirements Work at Disneyland

Disneyland measures guests against a height board at the entrance of each attraction with a height requirement. Cast Members may measure children who appear to be close to the minimum. There is often a second measurement checkpoint inside the queue near the boarding area — so passing the first check does not guarantee boarding.

Important tips:

  • Measure your children at home before your visit using a tape measure against a wall, with shoes on — wear the same shoes they’ll wear at the park
  • Disney cannot and will not make exceptions to height requirements, regardless of how long you waited
  • Height requirements are about safety — the restraint systems on thrill rides are designed for guests above the minimum height
  • Most rides at Disneyland Resort have no height requirement — the majority of the park is accessible to guests of all ages and sizes

Rider Switch — What to Do When Someone Can’t Ride

If your group includes guests of mixed heights, Disneyland’s Rider Switch program lets you take turns on rides without waiting in line twice. Here’s how it works:

  1. The whole group approaches the attraction together
  2. One adult waits with the child or guest who doesn’t meet the height requirement while the rest of the group rides
  3. When the first group finishes, the waiting adult and up to two others can board immediately using the Lightning Lane entrance without rejoining the standby queue

Ask a Cast Member at the attraction entrance about Rider Switch before entering the queue. It’s available at all rides with height requirements at Disneyland Resort.

Under 35 Inches

No rides with height requirements are accessible, but the vast majority of Disneyland is still open. Dozens of classic attractions welcome guests of any height including Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, it’s a small world, Peter Pan’s Flight, Dumbo, and many more. A very young child can have a full and magical Disneyland day without hitting any height requirement rides.

35–39 Inches

Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster at 35 inches opens up. Goofy’s Sky School at DCA opens at 38 inches — a gentle junior coaster that’s a great first step toward bigger rides. Otherwise still the same expansive no-requirement lineup.

40–41 Inches — The Big Unlock

This is the most significant height milestone at Disneyland Resort. Reaching 40 inches opens:

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad — the “wildest ride in the wilderness”
  • Space Mountain — high-speed roller coaster in complete darkness
  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure — log flume with a 50-foot final drop
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance — the most immersive attraction at the resort
  • Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT! — most thrilling drop tower in California
  • Radiator Springs Racers — the crown jewel of Disney California Adventure
  • Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind — family spinner at DCA

If your child is approaching 40 inches, this is the milestone to target before your trip.

42–45 Inches

Matterhorn Bobsleds opens at 42 inches — Disneyland’s original roller coaster and one of the most iconic rides in theme park history. Also Grizzly River Run at DCA (42 inches) — a white water raft ride where you will get wet.

46–47 Inches

Indiana Jones Adventure opens at 46 inches — the height requirement jumps here because the Enhanced Motion Vehicle ride system is significantly more physically intense than standard coasters.

48 Inches and Above

Incredicoaster at DCA opens at 48 inches — the fastest ride at Disneyland Resort with multiple loops and a top speed of 55 mph. This is the only 48-inch requirement ride at the resort, making it the final height milestone to unlock.

Tips for Managing Height Requirements at Disneyland

Measure at home in park shoes. The single most important preparation step. Measure your child standing straight against a wall wearing the exact shoes they’ll have on at the park. A thick-soled shoe can add meaningful height — a thin sneaker may not.

Don’t try to sneak extra height. Disneyland Cast Members are experienced at spotting guests who are standing on tiptoe or wearing shoe inserts specifically to clear a height requirement. This isn’t just a rule — it’s a genuine safety issue. Height requirements exist because restraint systems don’t work correctly for guests below the minimum height.

Focus on what your child CAN ride. The majority of Disneyland is accessible to guests of all heights. A 36-inch toddler can ride Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Peter Pan’s Flight, it’s a small world, Dumbo, and dozens more iconic attractions. Build your day around these rather than fixating on what’s not accessible yet.

Use Rider Switch strategically. For must-do rides that some family members can’t board, Rider Switch means no one has to skip anything. Plan your Lightning Lane selections with Rider Switch in mind so the whole trip runs smoothly.

Check the Disneyland app for current ride status. Height requirements are listed for each attraction in the app along with current wait times. Use it to build a real-time game plan on the day of your visit.

Visit Disneyland’s official height requirements page before your trip to confirm current requirements — occasionally these change following refurbishments.
