Darth Vader is no longer hiding behind a paywall in Tomorrowland. As of April 29, 2026, the Sith Lord has moved permanently into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland, and meeting him is now free, atmospheric, and open to every guest in the park. His entrance is one of the most electrifying character moments at the entire resort.
The move is part of a massive timeline shift at Galaxy’s Edge that brought original trilogy characters into a land that was previously locked to the sequel era. Here is exactly where to find Vader, how the encounter works, what changed and why, and every other original trilogy character now on Batuu.
Where Darth Vader Used to Be
Before the timeline shift, Darth Vader’s only meet-and-greet location at Disneyland was inside Star Wars Launch Bay in Tomorrowland. It was a Visa cardholder-exclusive experience, meaning you needed a Disney Visa card to access the meet-and-greet. If you did not have the card, you could not meet Vader. Period. He was effectively behind a paywall.
That era is over. As of April 29, 2026, Darth Vader no longer appears at Star Wars Launch Bay. His Tomorrowland meet-and-greet has been permanently replaced by Kylo Ren, who now holds that space. Vader has moved exclusively into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, where he is available to every guest with park admission. No special card, no extra fee, no paywall.
Where Darth Vader Is Now
Darth Vader appears in the Black Spire Outpost section of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, primarily in the area near the Millennium Falcon and the TIE Echelon (the large First Order ship near the entrance to the land). He is joined by Imperial Stormtroopers who patrol alongside him.
His appearance begins with a show moment. Stormtroopers march through the outpost, clearing the way and establishing an Imperial presence. Then Vader arrives. The entrance is dramatic, accompanied by John Williams’ “The Imperial March” playing through the land’s speakers. The crowd parts. The temperature of the whole area shifts. It is genuinely one of the best character entrance moments at any Disney park.
After the show moment, Vader and the Stormtroopers move through the area and interact with guests. This is an atmospheric, roaming character experience, not a traditional queue-based meet-and-greet with a line and a PhotoPass photographer at a fixed spot. Vader walks through the crowd, stops to confront guests, poses for photos, and delivers in-character dialogue. The Stormtroopers interact independently as well, questioning guests and maintaining their patrol.
Photos are welcomed and encouraged. Vader will pose with guests who approach him during the roaming encounter. However, he does not sign autographs. This is consistent with the atmospheric character model Galaxy’s Edge has used since opening. No characters in the land sign autographs.
When Darth Vader Appears
Darth Vader makes multiple appearances throughout the day, with specific times varying by date. The most reliable way to check his schedule is through the Disneyland app. Open the app, go to the entertainment or character section, and search for Darth Vader. His appearance times for that day will be listed.

On the first day of the timeline shift (April 29, 2026), Vader’s scheduled appearances were spread across the afternoon and evening hours. Expect a similar pattern going forward: multiple appearances per day, each lasting roughly 15 to 20 minutes, with the first typically starting in the late morning or early afternoon.
Early reports from the first two weeks of the timeline shift indicate that the initial crowds to meet Vader were large (as expected for a brand-new character experience) but have already begun to thin as the novelty period settles. Groups of 12 to 15 guests at the start of each encounter are now common, making it genuinely easy to interact with Vader without a significant wait.
Tips for the Best Darth Vader Encounter
Arrive at the Millennium Falcon and TIE Echelon area about 10 minutes before his scheduled appearance time. The Stormtrooper patrol begins a few minutes before Vader himself arrives, and watching the full sequence from the Stormtrooper entrance to Vader’s appearance is significantly more immersive than showing up after he is already walking around.
Position yourself along the main pathway between the Millennium Falcon and the entrance to the land. This is the corridor Vader walks through during his roaming encounter, and being on this path gives you the best chance of a direct interaction.
Stay in character if you want to. The Cast Members performing as Vader and the Stormtroopers are fully committed, and guests who play along (calling him “Lord Vader,” answering Stormtrooper questions, or pledging loyalty to the Empire) get noticeably more interaction time than guests who just ask for a photo. It makes the experience better for everyone.
Have your camera ready before the encounter starts. The show moment happens fast, and Vader’s entrance through the crowd is the most dramatic photo opportunity. Do not fumble with your phone when the March starts playing.
The Full Timeline Shift: Every Character Now in Galaxy’s Edge
Darth Vader is the headliner, but the April 29 timeline shift brought an entire roster of original trilogy characters into Galaxy’s Edge. Here is the full current character lineup on Batuu.
Original Trilogy Characters (New as of April 29, 2026)
Darth Vader. Roaming encounters near the Millennium Falcon and TIE Echelon. Accompanied by Imperial Stormtroopers. Multiple appearances daily. Show moment entrance with “The Imperial March.”
Luke Skywalker. Roams the outpost seeking knowledge of the Force, artifacts related to lightsaber building, and kyber crystals. Has been spotted in the area near Savi’s Workshop and throughout the main marketplace.
Princess Leia Organa. Appears near the Millennium Falcon, recruiting travelers and locals to help keep Luke safe from the Empire. Often paired with Chewbacca. Empire-era costume (white gown, tactical vest).
Han Solo. Lingers around his prized ship (the Millennium Falcon), tempted by the local cantina. Has been spotted near the Falcon and along the main pathway. Roaming and atmospheric.
Imperial Stormtroopers. Patrol the outpost in groups, questioning guests and establishing the Imperial presence. Now wearing original trilogy-era armor (Galactic Empire) rather than the sequel-era First Order design in the main Outpost area.
Characters That Remain from the Previous Lineup
Chewbacca. Still on Batuu. Often paired with Leia or Han near the Millennium Falcon.
R2-D2. Continues to appear throughout the land.
The Mandalorian and Grogu. Still meeting guests on Batuu. They appear in a separate area from the original trilogy characters, maintaining timeline separation.
Ahsoka Tano. Has been spotted alongside Luke Skywalker on some days, which makes sense given the timeline overlap between the original trilogy era and the events of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka series.
Rey. Continues to appear in the Resistance Camp area near Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Rey and the Resistance remain in the sequel-era portion of the land, which has not changed timelines.
Character That Moved Out
Kylo Ren. No longer appears in Galaxy’s Edge. He has moved to Star Wars Launch Bay in Tomorrowland, taking over the meet-and-greet spot that Darth Vader previously occupied. If you want to meet Kylo Ren, go to Tomorrowland.
How Disney Keeps the Timelines Separate
Characters from different eras do not interact with each other and do not appear in the same area at the same time. You will not see Han Solo chatting with Rey or Darth Vader walking past the Resistance Camp. Disney’s Imagineers and Live Entertainment team designed the timeline expansion so that different sections of Galaxy’s Edge represent different points in the Star Wars saga.
The Black Spire Outpost main area (near the Millennium Falcon, the marketplace, and the TIE Echelon) has shifted to the original trilogy and Mandalorian era. This is where Vader, Luke, Leia, Han, Mando, and Grogu appear.
The Resistance Camp area (near Rise of the Resistance) remains in the sequel era. Rey, Resistance fighters, and sequel-era Stormtroopers continue to appear there.
Visual changes support the separation. New banners depicting the Galactic Empire emblem (rather than the First Order) now hang over the Outpost. Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities has new props reflecting the expanded timeline, including items from across the saga’s history. The Mandalorian’s Beskar helmet and pulse rifle that were previously on display have been replaced with other artifacts. John Williams’ original trilogy scores now play throughout the Outpost, replacing the sequel-era music.
What Else Changed with the Timeline Shift
Smugglers Run Update (Coming May 22, 2026)
Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is receiving a significant content update on May 22, 2026. Pilots will be able to engage in new adventures featuring locations from the original trilogy including Coruscant, the gas giant Bespin, and the wreckage of the second Death Star above the forest moon of Endor. This is the first major ride content update to Smugglers Run since it opened and adds original trilogy destinations to what was previously a sequel-era-only experience.
Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities
The collectibles shop reopened after a short closure with new inventory reflecting the expanded timeline. Props from across the saga’s history are now on display, and Disney has confirmed that “screen-used” props from the Andor series are hidden somewhere in the shop, though their specific identity and locations remain a mystery for guests to discover.
New Merchandise
The Aurebesh Collection, featuring the iconic Star Wars logo written in the in-universe Aurebesh script, launched alongside the timeline shift. Additional merchandise celebrating the original trilogy, the Mandalorian era, and Galaxy’s Edge lore is available at shops throughout the land.
Why This Matters
The original Galaxy’s Edge timeline was one of the most debated decisions Disney made when the land opened in 2019. Setting it exclusively between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker meant that the most beloved characters in the franchise (Darth Vader, Luke, Leia, Han) could not appear. Guests walked into a $1 billion Star Wars land and could not meet the most iconic villain in movie history. The decision prioritized immersive worldbuilding over the characters people actually wanted to see.
The 2026 timeline shift fixes that. Vader’s entrance through Galaxy’s Edge, accompanied by the Imperial March and flanked by Stormtroopers, is the kind of moment that the land was always capable of but could not deliver under the original timeline rules. Seeing him emerge to the masses rather than buried behind a Visa cardholder paywall in Tomorrowland is, for many fans, the biggest improvement to Galaxy’s Edge since it opened.
The land is better now. If you have not been to Galaxy’s Edge since 2019 or 2020, this is the version worth coming back for.
